Grade One Area Court in Aco Estate, Abuja, has sentenced Ezechinoso Augustine, proprietor of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) center in Onitsha, Anambra State, for violations associated with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration process. The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) charged Augustine with concealing, breaching trust, and stealing, according to a statement by JAMB spokesperson Fabian Benjamin.
Augustine was accused of signing and collecting sensitive registration materials from the Anambra State JAMB office to facilitate UTME registration. However, he reportedly concealed these materials with the intent to defraud JAMB, allowing him to procure a duplicate for further fraudulent activities at his CBT center. Despite claiming the materials were faulty, evidence showed that he indeed concealed them, leading to his conviction on all charges.
The court found Augustine guilty of criminal breach of trust, which carries a nine-month prison term or a fine of N30,000; attempted cheating, which can result in a six-month prison sentence or a fine of N20,000; intent to conceal, which can lead to a three-month prison term or a N10,000 fine; and theft, which entails an eight-month prison term or an alternative N30,000 fine.
JAMB has commended the court’s decision and warned against any infractions, reinforcing its commitment to protecting its systems and clients. The organization has also expressed its resolve to pursue a data protection violation case involving a CBT center employee who allegedly compromised the personal information of a 15-year-old candidate, ensuring justice is upheld in this matter as well.
