PhD Opportunity in Sweden
Are you passionate about advancing sustainable metallurgy and contributing to a greener future? This is a PhD Opportunity in Sweden at the Luleå University of Technology (LUT) for a motivated student who is to be part of the groundbreaking ‘Green Steel for a Fossil-free Future’ project. This is your chance to make a difference in the transition towards a carbon-neutral steel industry.
About Luleå University of Technology
LUT is a leading institution at the forefront of growth, with world-leading expertise in various research fields. Committed to innovative education and groundbreaking research, LUT collaborates on the global, national, and regional levels, aiming to drive societal progress.
The ‘Green Steel for a Fossil-free Future’ Project
This interdisciplinary research project, funded by the Just Transition Fund and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, is a vital step toward a sustainable, CO2-neutral steel industry. In partnership with the Royal Institute of Technology, LUT is researching fossil-free steel properties and performance, focusing on hydrogen utilization and new alloying elements.
Your Role as a Doctoral Student
As a PhD student in this project, you’ll be part of a multifaceted interdisciplinary research environment. You’ll collaborate closely with research institutes and industry partners, addressing essential questions about the transition from fossil-based blast furnace technology to hydrogen-based direct reduction. Your research will explore the impact of new slag compositions facilitated by hydrogen metallurgy on critical slag rheology properties, such as viscosity and crystallization phenomena. Your findings will contribute to a successful fossil-free future.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, you should have a master’s degree in civil engineering, metallurgy, chemical engineering, process engineering, materials engineering, or condensed matter physics. Experience in experimental and simulation work, along with knowledge of inorganic and physical chemistry in high-temperature process metallurgy, is advantageous. Proficiency in English is essential. Throughout the selection process, your relevant knowledge, experience, the quality of your master’s thesis, and personal characteristics relevant to research work will be evaluated.
Application Details
The employment as a doctoral student is for four years, with potential teaching and department duties. The place of employment is Luleå. To apply, submit a personal letter, CV, and verified copies of diplomas and the thesis in Swedish or English by the November 30, 2023 deadline.
