The Megatrends Afrika project is offering three fellowships to African researchers in collaboration with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in Bonn, and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). This project engages in policy-relevant interdisciplinary research on Africa, providing policy advice to decision-makers. Its core research themes include actors of violence and the changing nature of conflict, the effects of megatrends on democratization and autocratization, and global power shifts and multipolarity.
Fellowship Details:
- Research projects will be conducted independently or in collaboration with project team members or other IDOS, IfW, and SWP colleagues.
- Fellows will contribute one paper to the project’s publication series.
- Fellowships are for a duration of two to three months between May 2 and November 30, 2024, on a full-time basis.
- Fellows will reside in the city of their host institution – Berlin (SWP), Bonn (IDOS), or Kiel (IfW).
- Monthly grant of €2,800 and an economy-class return trip between the fellow’s place of residence and Germany.
Profile Requirements:
- Preferably completed PhD in political science, economics, social sciences, geography, international relations, or relevant area studies.
- Originating from an African country.
- Strong research and publication track record in areas relevant to the Megatrends Afrika project.
- Experience in scientific policy advice is an advantage.
Research Topics 2024: Proposals on the following topics are particularly sought after:
- Conflicts and armed violence in the Sahel.
- Local perceptions of foreign intervention in conflict states.
- Demographic change or gender.
- Democratization and autocratization.
- Africa’s international relations in a new world order.
- Dynamics of regional integration in Africa and cooperation with external partners.
- The nexus between domestic politics and foreign policy.

The application should include a one-page letter of motivation, an academic CV, two recent publications, academic transcripts/diplomas, and a concept note (not exceeding 2,000 words) discussing the project’s description, academic and policy relevance, feasibility, and theoretical/methodological grounding.
Selection Process: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview, emphasizing academic and professional merit, project relevance, feasibility, and effective communication skills.
