The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) promotes access to quality education and enhances international diversity at American University in Washington, DC. This scholarship is for international students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to community service. The AU EGLS aims to empower students dedicated to making positive social and civic changes in under-resourced communities in their home countries.
Aim and Benefits:
- Covers full tuition, room, and board for two international students.
- Does not cover non-billable expenses (e.g., health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, etc.)—approximately US$4,000/year to be paid by the student.
- The scholarship is renewable for up to four years based on satisfactory academic performance.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be an international student needing a non-immigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) to study in the U.S.
- Not eligible if you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or enrolled in post-secondary studies in another institution.
- Graduated secondary school no earlier than 2023.
- Minimum 3.8 GPA (out of 4.0) or in the top 10% of graduating class.
- Demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, and commitment to advancing the needs of your community.
English Proficiency Requirements:
- TOEFL: 95+ iBT (all subscores 20+).
- IELTS: 7.0+ (all subscores 6.0+).
- Duolingo: 125+ (all subscores 115+).
- SAT: 33 minimum Reading subscore or 630+ on the EBRW section.
- ACT: 29 minimum in English.

Application Process:
- Complete the Common Application or Coalition Application with all required documents by December 1, 2024.
- Create your applicant portal when invited.
- Submit a bank letter and AU Declaration of Finances Form confirming a minimum of US$4,000.
- Submit official English proficiency test scores directly from the testing agency.
- If applicable, provide an EducationUSA adviser’s letter for supported programs (e.g., FLEX, YES high school scholarships).
Important Notes:
- Applicants not selected for the scholarship may still be considered for admission to AU and eligible for partial merit scholarships.
- Proof of funds totaling US$81,620 (estimated cost for the first year) may be required for further admission.
IMPORTANT: The AU Emerging Global Leadership Scholarship application process involves two steps:
- Step 1: Applicants who wish to be considered for AU EGLS full or partial scholarships must first submit their Common or Coalition application and all supporting documents before December 1, 2024.
- Step 2: Submit the AU EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal by the required December 1, 2024 special program deadline. You must complete Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application. Late applications will not be considered.
AU Emerging Leader Scholarship applicants should apply Regular Decision for fall 2025 (not Early Decision ED or Early Action EA) and will be notified by April 1st, 2025.
