Recipients of the Award

The first-ever TWAS Mohammad A. Hamdan Award was given to Abdon Atangana, a Cameroonian applied mathematician with the Institute for Groundwater Studies in Bloemfontein, South Africa. His mathematical findings, predictive equations called differential and integral operators, have found broad application in modeling across many fields for their ability to make more complicated predictions

TWAS and Its Objectives

TWAS, founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, aims to build strength in science and engineering in developing nations to address challenges such as hunger, disease, and poverty. The Academy had essential support from Italian scientists and political leaders from the start.

The TWAS Mohammad A. Hamdan Award, established in 2020, recognizes outstanding mathematical work carried out by scientists in Africa or the Arab region and provides a significant cash award and certificate to the recipients. The award aims to support and encourage scientific capacity-building in the developing world.

Requirements for TWAS Mohammad A. Hamdan Award Qualification

  • The award recognizes outstanding mathematical work (pure, applied, probability, statistics) by scientist working and living in Africa or the Arab region.
  • Eligible candidates are nationals of an African or Arab country, who have been living and working there for a minimum of two years immediately prior to their nomination.
  • TWAS Fellows are not eligible.
  • Self-nominations and nominations from jury members will not be considered.

Interview date, Process and Venue for TWAS Mohammad A. Hamdan Award

A nomination is considered complete only if includes all of the following information/material:

  • Nominator contact details
  • Nominee (the candidate) contact details and general information on the nominee, including the country where he/she has been working and living in the previous two years
  • Authorization from the nominee to process his/her personal data for the purposes of his/her nomination, in conformity to Art. 13 of the Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003. This authorization can only be submitted through the online platform. The privacy authorization form is available for download in the section “Nominee’s Personal Data”. The form must be duly filled and signed by the candidate and then uploaded onto the online platform
  • Suggested citation (15-20 words highlighting the nominee’s scientific achievements in mathematical sciences)
  • Supporting statement regarding the nominee’s contribution. Supporting statements should explain in detail the work performed by the candidate and its significance in the relevant scientific context. Clear reference should be made to the scientific impact of the nominee’s work. Vague supporting statements will not be considered and will negatively affect the evaluation
  • Clear and detailed account of any time spent abroad by the nominee in the prevous two years
  • Information on the PhD subject area, year and awarding institution
  • Brief information on membership in academies and societies
  • Brief information on awards and honours received
  • List of 10 most significant publications listed in an internationally acceptable format
  • Nominee’s brief CV and her/his complete list of publications are also to be uploaded, separately, onto the online platform.

Selection

Selection is made on scientific merit. A pre-screening of the nominees is first be done at TWAS. Subsequently, the nomination dossiers of qualified candidates are submitted to jury members for their evaluation.
