The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships aim to strengthen higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa by supporting the training of highly qualified professionals and future university teachers.

This fully funded scholarship supports African students to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees in their home countries or in other Sub-Saharan African countries.

The scholarship covers tuition fees, monthly stipends, health insurance, research and study allowances, and travel costs (for In-Region scholars).

About the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships are funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to promote sustainable development in Africa.

The program supports postgraduate students to gain high-level qualifications that will enable them to contribute to teaching, research, and development across the continent.

Scholarship recipients will study either:

  • In their home country (In-Country Scholarships), or

  • In another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region Scholarships).

Female applicants and students from underrepresented regions are strongly encouraged to apply.


Scholarship Benefits

For the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships 2026, funding is available for:

  • Master’s Degree: Up to 2 years

  • PhD Degree: Up to 3 years

Scholarship Value Includes:

  • Monthly allowance: up to €600 per year

  • Study & research allowance: up to €920

  • Printing allowance: €800

  • Tuition fees covered

  • Travel allowance (for In-Region holders)

  • Health insurance coverage


Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student from Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree (for Master’s applicants) or a Master’s degree (for PhD applicants).

  • Intend to pursue studies in their home country or another African partner institution.

  • Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions are highly encouraged.

Note: In-Country scholarships for South Africa are administered by the NRF (https://www.nrf.ac.za/).
